Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar New Westminster announces $16,000 new Scholarship program.
New Westminster, B.C. – Promises are easier made then kept. All too often the political landscape is marred with broken promises and subsequent shattered dreams. The Youth executive at Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster has worked hard to dispel that political stereotype. Among other initiatives, keeping the next generation on a path of both religious and social excellence has been a key focal point of the Society. The Society has developed a number of programs and coined a movement: “A Lasting Sikh Legacy”.
This New Years eve, the temple executive launched the Sant Teja Singh Scholarship Program. In discussing the details, temple President Harbhajan Singh Athwal explained that each year, four Grade 12 students would be recognized for their efforts inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Athwal also explained that the Society would be committing $16,000 to this endeavor on an annual basis.
This new award is in addition to the $2,000 provided each year for the Khalsa Birthday Scholarship through New Westminster Secondary School. This news was greeted with great admiration from the Sangat. Many recalled the financial strain that was levied upon the temple prior to the Youth taking over; now they marveled at the turn around and the societies persistence to fulfill their commitments.
Along with being a great spiritual leader, Sant Teja Singh was a scholar like few others obtaining his Master of Arts(MA), Bachelor of Laws(LL.B) and Post Graduate Master of Arts(AM) from Harvard University all in the early 1900’s. In carrying Sant Teja Singh’s Legacy forward, and his commitment to the Sikhs in Canada and in
particular the Khalsa Diwan Society, the scholarship program was developed.
