Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation

Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation was formed in 1993 in memory of S. Ujjaldidar Singh. Ujjaldidar Singh was a young Amritdhari Sikh who took Amrit at the age of twelve. After he took Amrit, he participated in Amrit Sanchars as a Paheredaar, and did Sewa where he could. He was proud to be a Sikh.
To promote pride in young Sikhs like Ujjaldidar Singh, the Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation was formed. The Foundation proudly participates in community serv ice, community events, Kirtan Darbars, and parades. The Foundation also holds a Punjabi School in Granada Hills, two Sundays every month to teach young children Punjabi, Kirtan, Tabla, Bhangra, and starting this year, basketball as well. The younger children also learn Gurbani while the older children participate in discussion sessions. The Punjabi school started in 1995, and is still going strong. Over one hundred children are enrolled in the school this year, and the waiting list gets longer year after year.
Sikh Children’s Day is an event the Foundation is proud to host. It is held the last Saturday of July every year. Over three hundred children take part in this special day, and participate in various competitions all day long. Starting in 1999, the Foundation also started giving away scholarships to deserving high school seniors. To date, nine $500.00 scholarships have been given away to young Sikh men and women who have a commitment to serving their community and others. Ujjaldidar Singh Memorial Foundation is a registered non-profit, 501-C organization, and all donations are tax deductible.

Sant Teja Singh Scholarship

Sant Teja Singh Scholarship

Note: 2011 Scholarship amounts have changed. Please see application form for further details.
Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar New Westminster announces $16,000 new Scholarship program.
New Westminster, B.C. – Promises are easier made then kept. All too often the political landscape is marred with broken promises and subsequent shattered dreams. The Youth executive at Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster has worked hard to dispel that political stereotype. Among other initiatives, keeping the next generation on a path of both religious and social excellence has been a key focal point of the Society. The Society has developed a number of programs and coined a movement: “A Lasting Sikh Legacy”.
This New Years eve, the temple executive launched the Sant Teja Singh Scholarship Program. In discussing the details, temple President Harbhajan Singh Athwal explained that each year, four Grade 12 students would be recognized for their efforts inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Athwal also explained that the Society would be committing $16,000 to this endeavor on an annual basis.
This new award is in addition to the $2,000 provided each year for the Khalsa Birthday Scholarship through New Westminster Secondary School. This news was greeted with great admiration from the Sangat. Many recalled the financial strain that was levied upon the temple prior to the Youth taking over; now they marveled at the turn around and the societies persistence to fulfill their commitments.
Along with being a great spiritual leader, Sant Teja Singh was a scholar like few others obtaining his Master of Arts(MA), Bachelor of Laws(LL.B) and Post Graduate Master of Arts(AM) from Harvard University all in the early 1900’s. In carrying Sant Teja Singh’s Legacy forward, and his commitment to the Sikhs in Canada and in
particular the Khalsa Diwan Society, the scholarship program was developed.
For more details and additional resources for the scholarship application process, the Khalsa Diwan Society has developed a unique website at www.sikhscholarship.com.

Khalsa Aid (KA) is primarily a humanitarian relief agency, based on the teachings of the Sikh Gurus who preached well being of all humanity. Since the launch of KA in 1999 we have provided aid in many different disasters, this has only been possible due to the generosity of the Sikh community worldwide but mostly funded by the UK based Sikhs. The idea behind KA has been to provide cross border humanitarian relief and also to raise awareness of global relief and development work.

There are many obstacles in relief work but the main one is corruption especially in the developing world. It's very frustrating and unfortunate that during any disasters there will be people trying to make a 'fast buck' out of misery of the already downtrodden victims. We at Khalsa Aid have never given cash to any groups or individuals but have carried out our own assessments by our relief team and then appointed local contractors and suppliers. We believe that our donors expect us to be diligent and responsible for every penny that they donate.
